International Day for the Fight Against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing

Each year on June 5, the global community recognizes the International Day for the Fight Against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing. The day highlights the importance of protecting marine resources, supporting sustainable fisheries, and ensuring a fair marketplace for law-abiding harvesters and seafood businesses.

Illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing remains one of the greatest threats to the long-term sustainability of global fish stocks. These activities can undermine conservation efforts, disrupt legitimate fishing operations, and negatively impact coastal communities that depend on healthy marine ecosystems.

To help address these challenges, Canada continues to invest in advanced monitoring and enforcement technologies. One example is Canada's Dark Vessel Detection system, which helps identify vessels that may be attempting to avoid detection by disabling their location-transmitting equipment. By combining satellite technology, data analysis, and international cooperation, authorities can better monitor fishing activity and combat potential illegal operations.

Efforts to reduce IUU fishing are critical to maintaining sustainable seafood supplies for future generations. Effective monitoring programs, responsible fisheries management, and collaboration among governments, industry participants, and international organizations all play an important role in protecting ocean resources.

As the seafood industry continues to evolve, innovation and cooperation remain essential tools in supporting sustainable fisheries and safeguarding marine ecosystems worldwide.
